Taking a Strategic Approach to Service User Involvement

A short course for decision makers in Social Care organisations.

 Too often in Social Care service user involvement despite the individual commitment of managers, staff and service users ends up going around in circles. It can have a limited sense of direction, have a minimal impact on key decisions and feel like one big headache.

 This course is designed to work with social care decision maker to encourage them to develop a strategic approach to help resolve the above issues. It will consider policy and practice, clarifying direction of travel and the planning to achieve clear and realistic targets that are relevant to participant’s organisations.

 Who should attend?

 Social Care managers, deputy managers, or senior workers, including providers of hostel services, move on accommodation, floating support and day centres

 Course Aim

 This course will give participants an opportunity to explore how they can best meet the needs of service users, their organisation and funders in developing, promoting and sustaining service user participation in their organisations.

 Course Objectives

 By the end of the course participants will; 

  • Know the regulatory context for service user involvement.
  • Have developed an outline policy for service user involvement.
  • Understand the barriers to service user involvement and identify the best ways of overcoming these barriers.
  • Have identified what level of involvement they feel is appropriate for their service users and understand the key pros and cons arising at each level.
  • Consider the dynamics of power, influence and culture in their organisations within the context of promoting service user involvement.
  • Create an outline project plan to achieve three specific goals to develop service user involvement.
