This course looks at the range of benefits and tax credits that can be paid to people who are in full time work (16+ hours). We look at claims by: · Low paid workers · People who have children · Workers with disabilities · Workers who are off work for a short period of time due to illness, pregnancy or caring responsibilities After a brief look at the non means tested benefits that can be paid to people who are working, the course focuses on the two tax credits: Child Tax Credit for low and middle income families, and Working Tax Credit for low paid workers. We look at the rules of entitlement for each one tax credit, and we see how they are calculated. We move on to look at changes of circumstances and Tax Credit overpayments. The focus of the course is on understanding how to maximise low paid workers incomes, and how to deal with common difficulties. The aim is to promote understanding in a practical context not to fill participants with detailed technical knowledge. Course Content Non-means-tested benefits Child Benefit and Disability Living Allowance can both be claimed by people who are working full time. We look briefly at these benefits to see who can claim which, and to understand their importance in relation to Tax Credit claims. Tax Credit Entitlement We look at the rules for each tax credit to see who can make claims and who misses out. Tax Credit Calculation The Sums Challenging Tax Credit Decisions Some Tax Credit decisions have a legal right of appeal other have a complaints procedure. We see which is which, and look at the most successful approaches for a challenge. Statutory Pay Benefits We look briefly at the statutory pay benefits (Maternity, Adoption and Paternity) for short periods away from work.
