SIGNIFICANT CONTACT WITH OFFENDERS
Course Objectives:
Successful resettlement and licence compliance is dependent upon prisoners returning to suitable accommodation. This course will help participants to provide housing assistance to prisoners from remand through to release. The course will provide practical information and advice to staff working with prisoners to enable them to:
- Sustain tenancies where appropriate
- Terminate tenancies where necessary
- Take early action to avoid rent arrears
- Apply for accommodation for release
Course Content:
- Housing assessment and action needed when the prisoner enters custody
- Preventing rent arrears
- Prisoners and Benefit - who is eligible? How to calculate release dates including Home Detention Curfew and End of Custody Licence
- Working with women prisoners
- Working with high risk offenders
- Discharge grants and benefits on release
- Housing options for homeless prisoners
- Providing advocacy for a homeless application
- Supported accommodation, sustaining a tenancy and floating support on release
- Discharge grants and benefits on release

Standard letters will be provided with the course handouts which can be used in future work with prisoners.
