Record Keeping & Confidentiality

Good record keeping is a requisite of a competent relationship with clients in any social care setting. Staff and managers must maintain and manage a variety of records in a way that enables the organisation to deliver an effective service to the client, is legal and accounts for activity to stakeholders. Issues such as what to record, how to manage confidentiality, and what access can an organisation reasonably expect to a partner agencies records are a perennial issue in many social care organisations. This course will equip participants with confidence and skills so that they can keep fair and accurate records, understand the legal and practice issues associated with confidentiality, comply with the Data Protection Act and the expectations of stake holders.

Please note that this course is a comprehensive revision of HLG’s successful Prove It course on record keeping, previous delegates on the Prove It course are advised to clarify their suitability for this course with HLG prior to enrolment.

Aim

By the end of the course participants will be confident and competent in making, maintaining and processing records and will be able to share records with but still respect the boundaries of confidentiality.

Objectives

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Know the legal frameworks relevant to written information including the Data Protection Act;
  • Understand how and when confidential information should be shared;
  • Have considered guidelines on style, content and clarity of information making records;
  • Know the legal context for handling confidential information, covering;
  • Be familiar with confidentiality policies and protocols;
  • Have considered the equal opportunity and anti-discriminatory issues that can arise in record keeping;
  • Consider a variety of scenarios that commonly arise in the participant's work.
This course will contribute to the learning needs of NOS Health & Social Care Level 3 Core Unit:HSC31d, update & Maintain records & reports & Health & Social Care Level 4 Unit 41c & 41d
