Blood Borne Viruses

Blood borne viruses are prevalent throughout the World. However, there is a lot of confusion about the different types of infections, how they may or may not be acquired, the possible symptoms, prevention strategies and treatments available. Worry and fear can often get in the way of people seeking help or information about these conditions.
This one day experiential course is aimed at anyone working in a supportive role with people in a variety of settings, including housing, hostels, drop in, advice and care workers, who would like to increase their knowledge.
Course objectives and content:
• To gain an understanding of the nature of blood borne viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis A, B and C
• To explore routes of transmission and levels of risk behaviour
• To look at the prevalence of the viruses
• To identify the possible signs and symptoms of infection
• To explore the areas around pre and post test counselling when someone is considering being tested
• To learn about the treatment options(anti viral drugs, vaccines and interferon) side effects of treatment and prognosis
• To explore some Department of Health, NICE and British Liver Trust guidelines for good practice and promoting healthy lifestyle choices
The course is mapped against the following Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS) Units, and against the Health and Social Care National Occupational Standards (HSCNOS) level 3 Units:
