Shelter Briefing on 16/17 yr old Homelessness
Shelter Children's Legal Service Briefing: Responding to youth homelessness following the G v LB Southwark Judgement
A House of Lords ruling earlier this year reinforced the duty on councils to provide support as well as accommodation to homeless 16 and 17 year olds under the Children Act 1989.
The cost of this could be as much as £2.4m a year for local authorities, based on a survey by lobby group London Councils.
In response, homelessness charity Shelter has published this briefing document for professionals and those advising homeless young people. Crucially, it will examine the ruling's impact on policy and practice.
The briefing highlights implications for staff in children's services and housing authorities, including highlighting ways of working and pitfalls that should be avoided when working with homeless young people seeking advice.
