Understanding & Working with Dementia
As life expectancy extends, the support of people with dementia becomes and increasingly important area in care. This one day course is designed for anyone involved in the direct support of people with dementia. It provides an overview of the various types of dementia and their symptons, key concepts in person centred dementia care, and ideas for communicating with people who are experiencing memory loss. It can be adapted to the needs of in-house groups.
Objectives
By the end for the course participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate an awareness of the main types of dementia and their symptoms (e.g Alzheimer's Disease, vascular dementia and alcohol related dementia)
- Discuss the experiences of people with dementia from a person centred perspective, and recognise the importance of "feelings based" care
- Suggest ways of maintaining identity and individuality for people with dementia
- Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of memory loss experienced by people with dementia, and suggest strategies for communicating with people with memory difficulties
- Discuss the importance of non-verbal communication
