Alcohol Awareness

This one day course is aimed at those who need to have a working knowledge of alcohol, its effects and the treatment options available. There has been increasing concern about the harm done by this legal drug; with growing media interest in its health and social impact. There are common misunderstandings around what constitutes ‘problem drinking’ and what just ‘social lubrication’ is. This course aims to raise awareness of the important issues.

Course content includes:

• Alcohol in social context.
• Physical and psychological effects (including withdrawal).
• Social effects and harms.
• DOH & NTA guidelines.
• Types of problem drinking.
• Disease and Social Learning models (Abstinence & Harm Reduction).
• Medical interventions.
• Counselling and advice options.
• Local services.
