Personality Disorder is a controversial diagnostic category and is currently a key topic for national mental health policy development. The meaning and the use of the term Personality Disorder are complex. People often use the term inaccurately, sometimes because of a lack of understanding, sometimes because of professional differences in interpreting the term. Diagnosing Personality Disorders is open to mistakes, especially as it is sometimes used to describe symptoms that do not fit any other category. Someone with a significant personality disorder is, however, likely to be very difficult to work with and the extent to which they are ‘treatable’ will vary. This two day course, facilitated by a nationally recognised expert, has two fundamental aims. First, to explain what personality disorder is, and second, to offer practical suggestions about dealing with people whose behaviour and ways of dealing with life and relationships appears to put them into this category.
