This one-day course gives a thorough grounding in all the important
issues relating to benefits and young people: The course covers:
AM - The Benefits
Although young people may face extra hurdles in accessing social
security benefits, the system is essentially the same for all claimants,
young or old. We begin by looking at the range of benefits that might be
claimed:
• Flat Rate (non-means-tested benefits) that might be claimed by young
people.
Including those who are sick or disabled, those who are carers and those
who are
pregnant or have children.
• Means tested Child Tax Credit for young parents
• Means tested Income Support and Jobseekers’ Allowance
PM - The Young People
Once we have examined the benefits that young people can claim, we move
on to look at the extra rules governing young people’s entitlements:
• Care leavers and social security
• Education and social security
• Income Support claims by young people
• Claims by young people for Jobseekers’ Allowance as a legal
entitlement
• Discretionary Jobseekers’ Allowance under the severe hardship rules
• Bridging Allowance
• Restrictions on Housing Benefit for young people. (Note we do not
cover Housing
Benefit in detail, but focus on the rules that relate specifically to
younger claimants)
