Course Aim: This one day course is aimed at those who need to have a working knowledge of alcohol, its effects and treatment options available. There has been increasing concern about the harm done by this legal drug; with growing media interest in its health and social impact. There are common misunderstandings around what constitutes ‘problem drinking’ and what is just ‘social lubrication’. This course aims to raise awareness of the important issues. Course content includes: · Alcohol in social context · Physical and psychological effects (including withdrawal) · Social effects and harms · DOH & NTA guidelines · Types of problem drinking · Disease and social learning models (Abstinence vs. Harm Reduction) · Medical interventions · Counselling and advice options · Local services This course covers the following DANOS units: AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists AA3 Enable individuals to find out and use services and facilities AB2 Support individuals who are substance users AF1 Carry out screening and referral assessment AG3 Assist in the transfer of individuals between agencies and services AI2 Help individuals address their substance use through an action plan
